Why Are we Here?

Equity In The Hamden Community

  • Hamden Action NOW was born out of police accountability protesting the police shooting and violence by Hamden Police Officer, Devin Eaton in April 2019.   Police violence is just one problem in our community!
  • We are working hard to be a resource for the Black, Brown and Indigenous (BBI) citizens within the Town of Hamden t as well as having a legislative voice and presence around the State of CT.
  • We believe that equity comes in having BBI and youth representation in the community Town Councils, leading the discussion on what is needed to improve our community
  • Poverty, crime and police violence are simply the by-products of economic, social and political oppression as white supremacy and racism is the foundation of our society.
  • Connecticut is the 2nd wealthiest state in the nation, with 17 billionaires in residence within our state, while our state being one of the most segregated in the nation.
  • Housing segregation has had the most negative impact to  realizing BBI equity within CT's urban communities like our Newhallville neighborhood, which is still reeling, economically, from the ongoing effects of redlining.
  • Hamden's youth ages 18-25 are the most underrepresented members of our town, Hamden Action Now, intends to support our youth in their civil engagement by attaining leadership roles throughout our community, including gaining seats on the Town Council, Board of Education, for Mayor and on the various Boards and Commissions.  Hamden's youth are our leaders of tomorrow.

Our Mission

  • Breaking the school to prison pipeline by removing School Resource Officers from the Hamden School District and employing restorative practices which will reduce the District reporting, annually, excessive discipline to the black and brown students and those with disabilities.
  • Having a public school system that recruits and hire black and brown teachers and administrators, with a move to include a fully inclusive curriculum.
  • Employing an equitable representation of BBI leadership in the Town employment and commissions
  • Having a transparent Police Department that DOES NOT EMPLOY THE USE OF CHOKEHOLDS, and having police accountable to their oath of service to all residents.
  • Having Hamden Police Department and Fire Department recruit and hire women, black, brown and indigenous local applicants to these public safety positions with a residency requirement.
  • Operating our Town's finances  and budget with integrity and transparency, with the reallocation of funds from the police budget to support a mobile crisis unit to respond to mental health and substance abuse crisis calls as opposed to the Police.  Mental health and substance abuse must not continue to be criminalized.
  • Empower Hamden's Youth to attain policy making and political leadership roles throughout our community

The Way Forward

  • We will not realize true equality in our society, in our state and in our town, until ALL citizens are willing to confront and reject the realities of white supremacy and their complicity in its continuation
  • Hamden Action Now is a platform to release the voices of Connecticut's Black, Brown and Indigenous  citizenry, we are demanding our voices are heard.  We are united in one voice- speaking power to power on these and other issues that are meaningful and vital to the sustainability of our community.
  • Our local and state elected officials work for us!  We elected them to represent our community and respond to our calls for justice and equity.
  • We encourage the BBI community to get involved in the election process, first by moving to eliminate voter suppression in our state, and most importantly holding our elected officials accountable to support and uphold our community's economic and social equity agenda.

Congratulations to our Youth Leaders!

Adbul Osmanu and Mariam Khan had a  big win in the November 2nd general election.  They made history, at 19 years old,  as the youngest town officials ever to be elected.  This is what youth empowerment and leadership looks like in a democracy.
